PRACTICING TICK SAFETY

Let’s talk ticks for a sec. I know, not the cutest summer topic… but if you’ve got kids running barefoot through the grass, pets who love to roll around outside, or you just enjoy a good hike or evening in the yard—this is something you’ll want to know 💬🐾🌿

Most tick bites are harmless (whew!), but some can cause allergic reactions or pass along illnesses that can seriously mess with your summer vibes 😬. Ticks don’t discriminate—they’re just as happy to hitch a ride on your dog as they are to sneak onto you. And once they’re on? Let’s just say they’re not in a hurry to leave. 😖

These little party crashers love warm, cozy spots like your:
🦶 armpits
🦵 back of your knees
🌀 belly button
👂 ears
👱 hairline
🧍‍♀️ waist
👖 and yep—even the groin (cue the awkward tick checks 🙈)

If you’ve been out and about, especially in grassy or wooded areas, it’s a smart idea to do a full-body check when you get home. Because unlike mosquitoes or flies, ticks like to stay attached after they bite—and they can be sneaky little things.

But don’t stress. I’ve got you covered with simple, natural ways to help keep ticks (and other bug annoyances) at bay 🦟💪 Plus, I’m sharing a few of my favorite summer DIYs and diffuser blends to keep your home and body feeling fresh, soothed, and protected.

Let’s dive in!

Okay, real talk… let’s say a tick does manage to sneak past you. What then? 😬

Here’s what most people don’t realize (and I didn’t either at first!): ticks can stay attached to your skin for up to 10 days after they bite. Yep—ten. They start out super tiny (like, hard-to-see tiny), but the longer they hang out, the bigger and easier to spot they get. 🧐

Most ticks will bite just once—no clusters like mosquito bites—but that one bite? It might leave behind a little red or irritated bump, or nothing at all. So if you’ve been outside and you notice something that looks like a mosquito bite but feels just a bit off… it’s worth a closer look. 👀

Now I don’t say this to freak you out, but I do think it’s good to know what to watch for—especially when it comes to Lyme disease. That classic “bullseye” rash? It might show up 3 to 30 days after the bite (and sometimes there’s more than one). It can even grow up to 12 inches wide over several days. 🎯😳

Some other signs your body might be reacting to a tick bite include:
🌡️ fever or chills
😣 headache or stiff neck
🤢 nausea or just feeling “off”
💪 muscle or joint pain
🤕 a full-body rash or swollen lymph nodes

Honestly, none of that sounds fun—but the good news is, the more you know, the more empowered you are to catch things early and support your body (and your family’s) in a natural way. 💚

Keep reading because I’m about to share the oils, blends, and DIYs that help me feel ready—not panicked—when summer bugs try to crash the party. 🦟🌿

TICK REMOVAL + PREVENTION

Alright, let’s talk about what to actually do if you find a tick. Don’t panic—it happens! 🧘‍♀️ You can totally handle this with just a little know-how (and maybe some steady hands).

Here’s exactly what to do if you find one on yourself or one of the kids:

🧺 First, make sure your hands and tools are clean.
You can use a tick removal tool or a pair of fine-tipped tweezers—whatever you’ve got on hand.

Then follow these steps:

1️⃣ Grab the tick as close to your skin as you can.
2️⃣ Pull straight up with steady pressure—no twisting or yanking. (We’re not playing Operation here 😂)
3️⃣ If part of the tick stays behind (like the mouth or head), try to gently remove that too.
4️⃣ Clean the bite with water, then apply rubbing alcohol, iodine, or even a hand sanitizer if that’s what you’ve got nearby.
5️⃣ Submerge the tick in rubbing alcohol (yes, we want to be sure it’s really gone).
6️⃣ Save it in a sealed container—just in case your doctor ever needs to see it. Pro tip: write the date and where you were when it happened. 🗓️📍

Now let’s talk prevention—because I’d way rather avoid these little pests altogether.

Here’s what I do before we head outside (especially in grassy, wooded, or brushy areas):

🧥 Wear long sleeves and pants (especially on hikes or yard cleanups).
🪻 Stick to the center of trails—not the brushy edges.
🌿 Spray TerraShield® on skin and treat clothing and gear with it (seriously, this stuff is gold).
🚿 Shower or bathe within 2 hours of being outdoors.
🔍 Do a full-body check—under arms, behind knees, in the hairline, behind ears, even the belly button. (I know… glamorous, right?) 😅

We can’t bubble-wrap our kids (or ourselves), but we can be smart about how we prep for outdoor fun. And bonus—using natural tools like TerraShield means no harsh chemicals all over your skin. 🙌
