7 essential oil recipes for PMS + period relief

Painful menstrual cramps are not fun. For me, the pain would sometimes make me curl up in a ball & cry. Maybe that's you too. And there's more monthly cycle symptoms to deal with.

There's a lot of info out there on ideas to help ... more water, medication, diet changes, exercise ... but most of the time, the only thing I could do was wait it out - miserable for a few days every month.

PMS can also be part of that monthly cycle for us, and hormone imbalances are commonly responsible for the emotional roller coaster of those symptoms.

Did you know there's actually a host of medical research on aromatherapy & dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual cramps)? Essential oils have been highly studied in relation to menstrual cramps & monthly cycles:

We've put essential oils to the test for PMS & period relief many times, so I've got some awesome options to share with you below.

Top 7 oils for period relief

PastTense

Apply this over wherever you're holding tension, as often as you need it. If you get tension headaches with your period, this will really help (apply to temples, across forehead, & back of neck/shoulders. Also wonderful applied lower back for back pain from cramping.

Deep Blue:

Deep Blue is always going to come in clutch with any type of pain.

  • This stuff is magic! Deep Blue Rub is a lotion that is so effective on pain. I love rubbing it into my lower back when cramps are making me miserable.

  • The Deep Blue Stick combines the magic of Deep Blue essential oil with the magic of Copaiba…also a heavy hitter in the pain game. This is a newer product and one that has quickly become a favorite. Try it. I think you'll love what it can do.

  • The Deep Blue Soothing Blend is the essential oil format of Deep Blue. Add a couple drops of this in the palm of your hand, and add a teaspoon or two of fractionated coconut oil to act as a carrier. Then rub it wherever you are having pain - typically your lower back or abdomen when it comes to pain during your cycle.

  • The Deep Blue Polyphenol Complex is a supplement. This capsule contains frankincense, turmeric, green tea extract, ginger, pomegranate, grape seed, curcumin, resveratrol, peppermint, & caraway seed. When it comes to pain or inflamation of any kind, this kicks butt.

Clary Calm

This favorite blend comes ready to apply in a roller bottle format. It contains the following essential oils: Clary Sage, Lavender, Bergamot, Roman Chamomile, Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, Geranium, & Fennel. It is AMAZING for cramps & evening out hormone levels.

How to use:

  • πŸ’¦ If you struggle with extreme hormone fluctuations you can apply ClaryCalm to the bottoms of your feet daily

  • πŸ’¦ Roll over the abdomen when experiencing painful cramping

  • πŸ’¦ Roll on the back of the neck if experiencing emotional mood swings

  • πŸ’¦ Also awesome for hot flashes (just apply to back of neck & to wrists)

For best results, roll on the bottoms of your feet once a day, every day…not just during your cycle. Then you can bump up your use when symptoms come on. It's much harder to get symptoms under control if you only use it when you start to experience them. If you keep it steadily in your system, it will help with those hormone fluctuations that cause the symptoms in the first place.

Balance

Rub this blend behind ears to balance mood. If your daughter isn't being nice & doesn't want to help herself with oilsπŸ€·β€β™€οΈ ... you can be kind of sneaky & add 3-4 drops of this in the diffuser wherever she's hanging out. Game changer! πŸ™Œ

Turmeric Dual Chamber Capsules

The benefits of turmeric have been known for a long time. One of the reasons we love it for period relief is because it combats inflammation. It's actually something I take as a daily supplement. This unique capsule combines the essential oil format with the herb format (something unique to doTERRA). Doing this increases the absorption of both by quite a bit, helping it to do its job better! Love combining this with Copaiba softgels & Deep Blue Polyphenol supplement for maximum period relief.

Copaiba Softgels

Take this with a Turmeric capsule & a Deep Blue Polyphenol capsule for maximum results, but they're also awesome all on their own. Copaiba works on the endocannabinoid system of the body (similar to how CBD works), but Copaiba is a much safer alternative. Here's a video discussing the difference HERE.

AromaTouch

I personally LOVE combining this with Lavender as one of my all time favorite scents. I'll put both in a warm bath with a 1-2 cups Epsom salts & I'm in heaven! Especially if I have any kind of soreness from my period or otherwise. Two drops of this + 2 drops Lavender in the diffuser is SO relaxing & great at bedtime. AromaTouch is a combination of the following essential oils cypress, peppermint, marjoram (which is a natural muscle relaxant), basil, grapefruit, & lavender. Heaven you guys! Seriously!
