Perimenopause Mood Swings: Why You Suddenly Can't Let Things Go

Why Couldn't I Just Let That One Go?

I have to tell you about something I noticed about myself recently, because it genuinely caught me off guard. I am not a yeller. I've never really been the type to raise my voice or make a big scene β€” most things just kind of wash over me, and I move on. My husband can say something a little careless, or forget something, and nine times out of ten I just let it roll right off. That's always been my normal.

But lately, something different has been showing up. My husband will say something β€” and I mean something so small, something that wouldn't have even registered with me a year ago β€” and instead of letting it wash over me like always, I dig my heels in. I get quiet and tight inside, and I just cannot seem to let it go. We're not yelling. It's not even really an argument. It's more like I plant my feet over something so silly, and twenty minutes later I'm sitting there thinking, "that was so dumb. Why couldn't I just let that one go like I normally do?"

If you've had a moment like that, where you found yourself holding onto something small way longer than it deserved, even though you know better, I want you to hear this: you are not turning into a difficult person, and you're not losing your easygoing side for good. After four pregnancies and raising four kids through every wild stage of life, I have had a whole lot of practice letting things go. So when this new "digging in" started showing up out of nowhere, I knew it wasn't really about the silly comment or the forgotten task. Something deeper was going on underneath it.

Here's what I've learned, and what I want you to know too: this isn't a character flaw. As we move through our late 30s and 40s, our hormones β€” mainly estrogen and progesterone β€” start dipping and swinging in ways they never used to. And those two hormones have a direct line to the chemicals in our brain that keep us feeling steady and easygoing, like serotonin. With my nursing background, I had to dig into the "why" behind this for myself before I could stop being so hard on me. Once I understood it, I started looking for real tools to help β€” not to suppress what I feel, but to support my body through it.

The Hormone-Mood Connection, In Plain Mom Language

Here's the short version. Estrogen actually helps your brain produce and use serotonin, the "feel calm and steady" chemical. When estrogen starts its perimenopause rollercoaster, serotonin gets dragged along for the ride. Add in less progesterone, which normally has a calming effect, and you've got a recipe for digging your heels in over something that, on any other day, wouldn't have bothered you at all. Once I understood that this wasn't "just me being stubborn," I stopped fighting myself and started supporting myself instead.

Meet My Calm-In-A-Bottle: doTERRA Balance

This is the oil I reach for the second I feel myself starting to plant my feet over something silly. doTERRA Balance is what's called a Grounding Blend, made specifically to help your body and emotions feel settled when life, or your hormones, start to feel a little too much.

What's actually in the bottle. Balance combines Black Spruce, Ho Leaf, Frankincense, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, and Osmanthus, and every single one was chosen on purpose. Black Spruce has a deep, woodsy aroma used for centuries to bring a sense of calm and grounding. Ho Leaf is loaded with linalool, the same calming compound found in lavender. Frankincense adds that deep, meditative quality, like hitting a pause button for your nervous system. Blue Tansy and Blue Chamomile bring a soft floral calm that rounds the whole thing out.

Why I trust the quality. Every oil in Balance is CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade, meaning it's gone through serious third-party testing for purity and potency before it ever reaches your bottle. Balance also comes pre-diluted in Fractionated Coconut Oil, so you can apply it straight from the bottle without mixing anything yourself. When you feel that stubborn streak creeping in, you don't have time to measure and mix β€” you just need something safe, ready, and effective.

How easy it is to actually use. I keep a bottle in my purse, one by my bed, and one practically glued to my kitchen counter. When I feel myself starting to dig in over something small, I put a drop or two in my palms, rub them together, and breathe it in for a few seconds β€” fifteen seconds, and it gives me just enough pause to let it go instead of holding on. I also love rolling it on the bottoms of my feet before bed.

How This Actually Helps

It's not that you suddenly turned into someone who holds grudges over nothing. Your internal alarm system got a little more sensitive, and your old "let it roll off me" reflex needs a little extra support to kick back in. What Balance gives you is a physical pause button, something you can hold and breathe in during the exact moment you feel yourself planting your feet over something that doesn't really matter. That tiny pause is the difference between stewing over a silly comment for the rest of the afternoon and just letting it go like you normally would.

Why This Matters

I've spent years being the one who lets things wash over her, and I like that about myself. So when these little moments of digging in started showing up, it frustrated me, because it didn't feel like me. I know how much lighter life feels when you have a tool that helps you respond like the wife and mom you actually want to be.

You deserve to feel like yourself again, easygoing and present, not stuck holding onto things that don't even matter twenty minutes later.
