A Bedtime Recovery Ritual for Sore Muscles and Restless Perimenopause Nights

Part 3 of 4 in the Perimenopause Joint and Muscle Comfort series.

The house is finally quiet. Dishes done, lights low, and you sit on the edge of the bed, which is exactly when your body decides to tell you everything it's been carrying all day. The tight low back. The achy knees. Shoulders that crept up toward your ears sometime around noon.

I know that moment well. For a long time, I treated bedtime like a finish line, something to cross as fast as possible so I could collapse and start all over again in the morning. Brush teeth, check on everyone, fall into bed. Done. And then perimenopause showed up and quietly rewrote the rules. Sleep got lighter. Waking at three in the morning became a regular thing. And the stiffness I'd been working so hard to support during the day seemed to settle in even deeper overnight.

Here's what I've learned since: the way we end our day matters just as much as the way we begin it. In Part 1 we talked about fast topical support, and in Part 2 we talked about nourishing your body from the inside. Both are real foundations. But there's a third piece that tends to get skipped because it doesn't feel productive: the ritual of winding down.

Your body does its repair work while you sleep. Muscles recover, tissues rebuild, and your natural response to everyday inflammation gets a chance to reset. When bedtime is rushed, tense, or constantly interrupted, that process doesn't get the quiet it needs. So I want to hand you something different: not another product to add to a long to-do list, but a short, repeatable ritual that tells your body, you're safe now, and it's time to restore.

It doesn't take an hour. It doesn't require candles and a spa robe (though I'm not against either). Mine is a handful of minutes, a few products I genuinely love, and a decision to stop treating my own rest as optional. Recovering from surgery has taught me more about slowing down than any wellness article ever could.

Let's build yours together.

AromaTouch: The Moment You Exhale

AromaTouch is the first thing I reach for once the lights go low. It's doTERRA's massage blend, made with Cypress, Lavender, Marjoram, and Peppermint, among other oils, and the aroma alone starts to shift the mood of the room. Warm, herbal, and calming, it signals to your body that the day is done.

To use it, mix a few drops with a little fractionated coconut oil in your palm and massage it into the places that have worked the hardest: shoulders, lower back, calves, the soles of your feet. Even two or three minutes makes a difference in how settled I feel. Take slow breaths while you do it. That's the whole secret. The massage isn't a task to check off. It's the moment you finally stop and pay attention to the body that's carried you through the day.

If you've never had a nighttime self-massage habit, this is the easiest way to begin.

Copaiba: For the Spots That Need Extra Attention

Every body has a few places that ask for more, and for me it's the low back, the hips, and the shoulders. That's where Copaiba comes in. Copaiba is a warm, woody oil that I layer on after AromaTouch, right on the spots that feel the most worn down at the end of a long day, like a tight low back, achy hips, or tired shoulders. (It's also one of the ingredients in the Deep Blue Stick from Part 1, so you may already be familiar with it.)

Dilute a drop or two with fractionated coconut oil, apply it where you need it, and let the warmth of your hands do part of the work. I love that it turns a quick application into a little moment of care instead of one more thing to get through. Think of it as the finishing touch of your ritual: AromaTouch to unwind the whole body, then Copaiba to give your trouble spots the attention they've been asking for.

MetaPWR Recharge Electrolyte Mix and MetaPWR Advantage Collagen+NMN: The Bookends

A great evening ritual starts earlier than you'd think. I take my MetaPWR Advantage Collagen+NMN and my MetaPWR Recharge Electrolyte Mix in the morning, and I think of them as the bookends of my recovery: they set the table for how my body is supported by the time I climb into bed.

Recharge Electrolyte Mix supports healthy hydration, which matters more than most of us realize. Cartilage is mostly water, and when we're running low, our joints are often the first to let us know. MetaPWR Advantage Collagen+NMN offers whole-body support as part of a daily routine, and I've found it pairs beautifully with the other pieces of my morning. Together, they make my evening ritual feel like the second half of a conversation my body and I started at breakfast.

If a full routine feels like too much right now, start with hydration. It's the simplest piece and the easiest one to build on.

Why Recovery Needs a Ritual, Not Just a Routine

A routine is something you get through. A ritual is something you step into. That difference matters more in perimenopause than at almost any other stage of life.

When your hormones start shifting, sleep is often one of the first things to feel it. Lighter sleep, more waking, a nervous system that seems stuck on alert long after the day is over. And since sleep is when your body does so much of its repair work, a restless night can mean you wake up feeling more stiff and sore than when you went to bed. It becomes a cycle: discomfort makes it harder to rest, and poor rest makes the discomfort feel louder.

A ritual interrupts that cycle, not by forcing sleep, but by giving your body a clear, predictable signal that it's time to downshift. The same few steps in the same order, night after night, become a cue your nervous system starts to recognize. That's why I keep mine simple and repeatable. Here's the order I follow:

  1. Dim the lights and put the phone down. Even ten minutes without a screen helps.

  2. Move gently. A few minutes of yoga or stretching keeps fluid moving through stiff joints.

  3. Apply AromaTouch, then Copaiba. Massage slowly and breathe.

  4. Take a short guided meditation. Even a few quiet minutes helps me let go of the day.

  5. Add warmth if you can. A warm bath works, and since my surgery I've also loved using my Lumebox on my abdomen. The gentle warmth is incredibly comforting. Save big on a Lumebox red light therapy device HERE.

I track my sleep and recovery with my Oura Ring, and I've noticed how much better my days go when I protect my evenings. You don't need a gadget to see it, though. You'll feel it in how you wake up.

You've Earned This Exhale

Friend, I want you to hear something: you are allowed to rest. Not because you finished everything on your list, not because you've earned it by being useful, but because your body has been working all day and it deserves to be cared for in return.

So tonight, try just one small piece. A few drops of AromaTouch. A few slow breaths. Five minutes that belong only to you. It might feel small, but small, consistent care is how this season gets softer. Somewhere down the road, you'll wake up and realize the mornings feel a little lighter, and you'll know exactly where it started.
