Why You Can’t Stay Focused (And It’s Not Your Fault)

“Why Can’t I Just Focus Like Everyone Else?”

Have you ever had one of those days where you feel like you’re constantly moving… but somehow getting nowhere?

You start the laundry, then remember an email you need to send…
You open your computer, then notice something on the counter…
You go to grab your phone for one quick thing—and suddenly you’re doing something completely different.

And by the end of the day?

You feel exhausted… but also frustrated, because the things that actually mattered didn’t get done.

I lived in that cycle for a long time.

And I’ll be honest—it started to mess with how I saw myself.

Because I’m not someone who doesn’t care.
I’m a list-maker. A get-things-done kind of person.

So when I kept carrying the same unfinished tasks from one day to the next… it didn’t make sense.

The Moment Everything Started to Click

This actually started with my son.

He was struggling with ADHD, and like most moms, I went into full “let’s figure this out” mode.

We tried different things. Some helped, some didn’t. Medication had its place, but I knew there had to be more we could do to support him.

That’s what led me to essential oils.

And I’m not exaggerating when I say—they were a lifesaver for him.

But here’s the part I didn’t expect…

As I started learning more about ADHD, I kept hearing that it can be hereditary.

And I remember thinking:

“Wait… this feels familiar.”

Because I started seeing it in myself.

The distraction. The jumping from task to task. The feeling of being busy all day, but not actually moving forward on the things that mattered most.

And suddenly, it wasn’t just frustrating…

It made sense.

Why Focus Isn’t About Discipline (Even Though We’ve Been Told It Is)

For so long, I thought my problem was discipline.

That I needed to:

  • Try harder

  • Be more organized

  • Stick to my list better

But here’s what I’ve learned:

👉 Focus is not a character trait. It’s a brain function.

And if your brain doesn’t have what it needs to function well…
No amount of willpower is going to fix that.

Think about it like this:

If your body was exhausted, you wouldn’t just say “try harder” and expect energy to magically appear.

Your brain is no different.

When it’s:

  • Low on key nutrients

  • Overstimulated

  • Running on stress

It’s going to look like:

  • Distraction

  • Forgetfulness

  • Lack of follow-through

Not because you’re lazy.

Because you’re unsupported.

What I Started Doing (That Actually Made a Difference)

I didn’t overhaul my life.

I didn’t add a complicated routine.

I just started giving my brain what it needed.

1. I Stopped Skipping My Foundation

Every morning, I drink:

This is my baseline.

Before this, I didn’t realize how much my brain was trying to function without the right support.

The electrolytes alone made a huge difference—especially because of the magnesium, which plays a big role in brain function, calming the nervous system, and reducing that “scattered” feeling.

Instead of starting my day already behind…
I was starting supported.

2. I Gave Myself a Simple Reset Button

Instead of pushing through distraction, I learned to reset.

Peppermint became one of my go-to tools.

I roll it on the back of my neck and shoulders when I feel myself drifting, and within minutes, I feel more alert and clear.

And here’s why that matters:

Your sense of smell is directly connected to the part of your brain that controls focus and attention.

So instead of forcing focus…
You’re triggering it.

3. I Created a “Focus Environment” (Without Even Thinking About It)

This one might sound small, but it’s powerful.

When I sit down to work, I diffuse:

And over time, my brain has learned:

👉 “This smell = time to focus.”

That means I’m not relying on motivation or willpower.

I’ve trained my environment to support me.

What Actually Changed (And Why It Matters So Much)

This isn’t about becoming a completely different person.

But here’s what I noticed:

  • I stayed on task longer

  • I finished more of what I started

  • I didn’t feel as scattered throughout the day

  • I stopped ending my day feeling frustrated with myself

And maybe the biggest one?

I felt more like me again.

If You’ve Been Struggling With Focus… Read This Part

If you’ve ever thought:

  • “Why can’t I just get it together?”

  • “Why do I keep getting distracted?”

  • “Why does everything feel harder than it should?”

I want you to hear this:

👉 You are not the problem.

Your brain just needs support.

And when you give it that?

Everything starts to feel easier.

Not perfect.

But easier.

And for a busy mom… that changes everything 💛
