Why Am I So Short With the People I Love? Holiday Mood Swings in Your 40s

My friend,

Let me guess how your week has gone.

Someone asked, β€œWhat’s for dinner?” before you’d even set your purse down. You said, β€œI don’t know, what do you want?” in a tone that could have frosted a window. Then you stood in the pantry for a full minute, staring at the cereal, wondering why you felt like crying and throwing something at the same time.

Later you replayed the whole thing in your head: Why did I say it like that? He only asked about dinner. I’m a terrible person. Is it normal to be this annoyed by a chewing sound?

(It’s not just the chewing. It’s the breathing, right? πŸ˜‚)

If you’ve nodded along to even one of those, come sit by me.

Somewhere in our forties, a lot of us notice that our fuse gets shorter. We tear up at a dog food commercial. We get irritated by a dishwasher loaded β€œwrong.” Then we sit in the driveway for ten minutes feeling awful about it, because we’ve spent years being the steady one in our home, and it’s unsettling when that steadiness starts to wobble.

I’ve lived through that season, and I wish someone had told me this stage of life can bring real shifts, and that changing hormones can play a part in how we feel from one day to the next. Nobody did, so I’m telling you.

And then comes November. The meals, the schedules, the gifts, the gatherings, the β€œcan you just bring one thing?” that is never one thing. It’s a lot to carry when your body is already asking for a little more grace.

So this is the first post in a four-part series I’m calling Her Turn. Because you’ve taken plenty of turns taking care of everyone else. πŸ’™

We’re starting with the one nobody warns us about: that shorter fuse.

Three simple tools for calmer days

ClaryCalm: for the days that feel like a lot

You know those days when your emotions seem to be running the show and you’re just a passenger? ClaryCalm is the roll-on I reach for. It’s a blend made with women in mind, with clary sage and lavender among its oils, designed to support a calm, balanced feeling through the changes our bodies go through.

What I love is how easy it is. No big routine, no instruction manual. Just roll it on and keep going with your day. Honestly, for those of us who are already juggling forty-seven things, easy is the whole point.

One tip: avoid sunlight or UV rays for at least 12 hours after applying it to exposed skin. During the day, I put it on skin that stays covered. At night, I roll it freely on my wrists and chest.

It’s small, steady support that helps you feel more like yourself. πŸ’™

Serenity: for the 10 p.m. brain meeting

You know the one. You finally lie down, your body is exhausted, and your brain calls an emergency meeting. Agenda: that thing you said in 2014, whether you answered that email, and whether the dog needs to go out. Again.

That’s where Serenity lives in my house, right by my bed. It’s soft, warm, and comforting, and it’s the scent that tells my whole system the day is officially over. I diffuse it while I wind down, or put a drop on my wrists and take a few slow breaths.

A calmer night often means a gentler start to the next morning, and mornings are when we need our patience most. The people we love feel that difference.

Bergamot: for the 4 o’clock crunch

Every home has that hour. Everyone is hungry, tired, and talking at once, and somebody is asking where their shoe is while the dog barks at nothing.

Bergamot is my bright, citrusy reset button for it. I diffuse it in the kitchen while dinner comes together, and the whole room feels a little lighter. It won’t make the shoe appear, but it does make the hour feel less like a storm you have to survive. β˜€οΈ

A note: if you use Bergamot on your skin, dilute it and avoid sun or UV exposure afterward. When in doubt, diffusing is the easiest way to start.

A sixty-second reset for the hardest moment

I don’t believe in 12-step wellness plans. I believe in a few small things you can actually keep doing. So the next time you feel that fuse start to burn:

  1. Say it out loud. Try, β€œI’m not mad at you. I’m just overloaded right now.” It sounds almost too simple, but it changes the whole room. Your family can handle β€œI’m overloaded.” They can’t read your mind about why you’re glaring at the dishwasher. πŸ˜‚

  2. Step away. Even if it’s only to the pantry or the back porch. Everyone assumes you’re looking for snacks. Let them.

  3. Roll on ClaryCalm (covered skin only if you’re heading outside) and take three slow breaths.

  4. Eat something with protein. Hangry is real, and it isn’t a character flaw. A cheese stick or a handful of almonds around 4 o’clock can save the evening. Let Bergamot do its thing in the diffuser while you eat.

  5. Close the day a little earlier. Put the phone down thirty minutes sooner tonight, and let Serenity tell your body the day is over.

It won’t make life perfect, and it isn’t supposed to. But those small pauses add up to a lot more patience for the people who matter most.

I also believe in natural tools and modern medicine when we need it. If your mood feels heavy or hard to shake, or it’s starting to affect your daily life, please talk to your healthcare provider. Taking good care of yourself means using every good resource available to you.

You get a turn too

The first time I put myself on my own to-do list, it felt almost silly. Like writing β€œbreathe” in the planner. But everything got a little softer: my home, my relationships, even the way I talked to myself in the pantry.

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish. It’s how you keep having something to give.

So this week, give yourself one small pause. One breath. One moment that’s just yours. You’re doing better than you think, and you deserve it. πŸ’•
