When your digestive system isn't feeling awesome - natural ways to support it

Eight years ago, when we were still new to using essential oils, my previously skeptical husband called me (I was out of town) to ask, "Where's that digestive stuff?" He was sick, had some associated belly pain, had experienced DigestZen essential oil & knew it worked...& fast.

My husband is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist, so he deals with helping kids with belly pain every day. It's amazing to me how many people live with a belly that hurts much of the time. My husband comments on how children come in thinking the pain they live with is normal … that everyone has it.

And if you're someone who has long time gastrointestinal discomfort, maybe you have come to believe it's normal too. Sometimes people get so fed up with everything they've tried, that hasn't worked, that they just give up & learn to live with the pain.

Did you know that every body function is connected to the gut?

A large part of the immune system is housed there, crucial neurotransmitters are produced, & nutrient assimilation happens. Repairing the gut repairs the mind and body in many ways.

But just like with medication, our bodies all respond differently to different things. We aren't the same.

I always tell my clients, "as long as you're willing to be as patient with essential oils as you are with the medications your doctor prescribes, we can figure out what works best for YOUR body".

Let's talk about what we can do with essential oils to support your gut & any associated discomfort there.

*Make sure that if you are having persistent digestive problems, that you get checked out by a qualified medical professional to make sure there isn’t something deeper going on.

Top essential oils for digestive system discomfort

DigestZen blend

Drink a few drops in water or in a capsule. You can also rub 2 drops on the outside of the stomach for anything digestion related (gas, nausea, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, belly pain or cramping, etc). Actually, my preferred method is 1-2 drops directly in my mouth followed by a glass of water. You can also purchase this already in capsules. Whenever our family takes this internally, we also take advantage of rubbing it on the belly or chest (wherever the problem is).

Tamer blend

This comes in a pre-diluted roller bottle so you can just throw it in your purse, backpack, or just stick it in your pocket & always have it with you. This blend was created with kids in mind, because they're a little more picky about smells & I've never met a kid who didn't love the smell of this. But adults can use it too. We definitely do. Just roll over the area that's giving you problems (belly or chest). You can also use this on your infant's feet if they're experiencing colic, then just slip some socks on so they don't accidentally touch their feet then their eyes (it doesn't feel good to get oils in your eyes).

TerraZyme (digestive enzymes)

Take 1-3 capsules with each meal to experience easier digestive function. The amount you take is dependant on how hard the food you are eating is to digest. When eating fast food (fatty or greasy food) you would want to take 3. Digestive enzymes break down your food so it can be absorbed & so you don't have belly pain when you eat.

Peppermint oil & Peppermint Beadlets

Peppermint is a smooth muscle relaxant known to the medical world. My husband (a Gastrointestinal doctor) uses it in some of his procedures. Doterra has the oil, which you can swallow a drop or two with some water…so good. It's also great for lowering body temperature when you rub it on your skin (you might want to dilute first as it can be very strong).

But doTERRA also has Peppermint Beadlets. The small beadlets contain about ¼ of a drop of the oil. You can swallow them whole, but I like to bite down on them, releasing the oil into my mouth. For me that works way better than just swallowing them whole. If you have motion sickness or an upset stomach for any reason, these are absolute magic for calming that down.

I've been on many a plane ride where there was turbulence, and that makes me so sick. The Peppermint Beadlets have saved me multiple times. I end up passing them down the row I'm sitting on, and my seatmates are always so surprised at how amazing they work! These are always in my purse wherever I go.

doTERRA Fiber

The FDA recommends 25-38 grams of fiber per day. That's next to impossible to get only from your food. And your digestive system struggles without it.

doTERRA makes a Fiber that actually tastes good! It even contains essential oils to help with digesting the fiber. I put it with 10 ounces of water + a little crushed ice. Then I use my electric handheld whisk to quickly blend it together. If you struggle with digestion problems I'd give it a try.
