Why Your Brain Won’t Shut Off at Night (Even When You’re Exhausted)
When You’re So Tired… But Your Brain Books a Concert
Have you ever been SO tired…
…and your brain decides it’s concert night?
I’ll never forget this one night.
I was exhausted. It had been a full day. I did my normal routine — diffuser on, brushed teeth, crawled into bed, read a little fiction until my eyes got heavy.
Out like a light.
Then 3-something in the morning I wake up to go to the bathroom.
No big deal.
I get back in bed. Pull the covers up. Close my eyes…
And my brain starts singing.
Not quietly.
Not faintly.
Full volume Taylor Swift lyrics.
On repeat.
The same line.
Over and over.
And the more I tried to NOT think about it, the louder it got.
So now I’m laying there thinking:
“Why am I singing this right now?”
“Stop.”
“Go to sleep.”
“If I don’t fall asleep immediately I’m going to be exhausted tomorrow.”
And just like that, it wasn’t about Taylor Swift anymore.
It was about the to-do list.
The errands.
The conversation I need to have.
The things I didn’t get done.
How tired I’m going to feel.
How cranky I might be.
And here’s the part no one talks about:
Trying to force your brain to be quiet… makes it louder.
If Your Brain Won’t Shut Off at Night, It’s Usually Not Anxiety
I used to think this meant I just “think too much.”
Or that I had anxiety.
But what I’ve learned is this:
When your brain won’t shut off at night, it’s usually a nervous system issue — not a personality flaw.
When we’re stressed, overstimulated, or running hard all day, cortisol stays elevated.
Cortisol is helpful during the day. It helps you get things done.
But if it’s still elevated at night?
Your brain stays alert.
And if you wake up at 3 or 4am and don’t fall asleep immediately?
Your brain goes into productivity mode.
Sound familiar?
You Don’t Fix Nighttime Anxiety at Night
This was a big shift for me.
You don’t fix nighttime spiraling at night.
You support your nervous system all day long.
Here are simple things that helped me — before we even talk about supplements:
• Getting morning sunlight within 30 minutes of waking
• Eating enough protein at breakfast
• Not skipping meals
• Walking after dinner
• Dimming lights an hour before bed
• Reading fiction instead of scrolling
• Practicing slow breathing (look up “box breathing”)
These are free.
And they matter.
Because they send signals to your body that it’s safe.
And safety is what allows sleep.
Hydration + Magnesium = Brain Support
Your brain is largely water.
Your nervous system depends on proper mineral balance to regulate calm signals.
If you’re under-hydrated, your body works harder.
A good goal? At least half your body weight (in pounds) in ounces of water daily.
And here’s the part most women miss:
Water alone isn’t enough.
Electrolytes help your body absorb and use that water.
Magnesium specifically supports relaxation pathways in the brain.
That’s why I use Recharge, which contains Magnesium L-Threonate — a form that crosses the blood-brain barrier.
But it’s not about “knocking myself out.”
It’s about supporting calm brain chemistry during the day so my brain doesn’t explode at bedtime.
I mix Recharge in with my VMG+ every morning.
Consistency > intensity.
My Nighttime “Brain Soften” Routine
Before bed, I diffuse oils that support calm emotions:
Lavender.
Serenity.
Adaptiv.
Copaiba.
Shinrin-Yoku.
Sometimes I combine 3 drops of two of them.
Scent connects directly to the emotional center of the brain. It bypasses logic and sends a quick signal: you’re safe.
I also read fiction.
When I start rereading the same sentence?
Lamp off.
If I wake up at night, I focus on slow breathing instead of doing sleep math.
Because calculating how tired I’ll be tomorrow never once made me fall asleep faster.
What Changes When Your Nervous System Feels Supported
You fall asleep faster.
You fall back asleep easier.
You stop waking up mad at your husband because of a dream where he cheated on you. (Yes. I’ve done that. Completely unfair. He still brings it up. 😂)
You wake up steadier.
Less edgy.
More patient.
Sleep affects:
Your cravings.
Your mood.
Your focus.
Your marriage.
If your brain won’t shut off at night, you’re not dramatic.
You’re overstimulated.
And overstimulation needs support — not shame.
If you want to use the same foundational support I use daily, you can order through my link or tap the button below and save $178. And if you’re not sure where to start, message me. I’ll help you think it through.
You don’t have to fight your brain.
You can support it.
