I first started looking into the power of essential oils when I was trying to rid my home of toxic substances 6 years ago. Synthetic fragrance is one of the biggest offenders in most homes, & is a hormone disruptor (among many other problems). My youngest son had been diagnosed with ADHD, & taking care of hormone disruptors in our cleaning products (& also in processed food) was something I knew was a big deal in helping him to get a handle on things.

I was not interested in looking at essential oils at all … until someone I trusted shared the thousands of medical studies found in prominent research journals. Since this guide is a focus on cleaning up the cleaning products in our home, I thought I’d share a few more recent studies below, if you’d like to check them out.

Essential oils are pretty dang awesome in this arena! I love having something in a spray bottle that you can hand a toddler to help you clean up, without worrying about the effects of something we would have used previously, like bleach.

These are just a few examples of thousands of exciting studies. I encourage you to do your own research on this topic. A really great tool to use is “Google Scholar” which will bring up actual medical and research journal studies.

👉 This study focused on nine different essential oils as natural sanitizing solutions for disinfecting food contact surfaces.

👉 This study of 14 different essential oils showed essential oils were consistently as effective or more effective to reduce the population of microorganisms.

👉 A 2019 study on the effectiveness of using Lemongrass essential oil in hand sanitizer, which enhanced the effectiveness, while avoiding the commonplace synthetic fragrances in most hand sanitizers (known for causing contact dermatitis).

👉 A 2021 study on how Clove essential oil (which is part of doTERRA’s OnGuard blend) + citric acid were found to be as effective or even more effective than sodium hypochlorite (a.k.a. bleach) at reducing bacteria on apples when used to clean them.

👉 A 2017 study on the effectiveness of clove, eucalyptus, and lavender essential oils on fungal contamination of indoor air - which found that the essential oils performed better than traditional cleaning compounds.

👉 A 2019 study on the effectiveness of Rosemary & Grapefruit essential oils against Hepatitis A virus on soft fruits.

👉 A promising 2020 study on the effect of essential oils against viruses.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Household Products Database is a consumer's guide that provides information on the potential health effects of chemicals contained in more than 16,000 common household products used inside and around the home. This database allows scientists and consumers to find out about ingredients in brand-name products. This can be used in addition to the site linked in the picture above.

One of the things I love most about essential oils & cleaning … is the ability to clean the air in your home & make it smell beautiful in the process. You can get all the yummy smells of your favorite candles, but without the bad side effects of the synthetic toxic “fragrance” in those candles (ex. hormone disruption, headaches, allergies, ADHD…not fun stuff). Not only that, but you get all the health benefits from each of the oils you’re using to cleanse the air.
